Picking the Right Web Hosting For Your Financial Advisor Website

Let’s look at the differences between the two so you can choose the right package for your needs.

  • Website Support 

We offer unlimited website support to all of our hosted clients.  We understand that creating and maintaining a website is a new thing for most of our clients, and can be difficult to navigate with all the confusing terminology and new technologies involved.  

While we try our hardest to keep it as simple as possible, we know it’s not always easy to get things working exactly the way you’d like. Just give us a call or send us an email, and we’ll figure out any website maintenance issues you’ll encounter.

  • Content Updates

Here’s where people get confused. Website support only includes services that help you maintain your website and keep it up and running. 

Content updates are extra services which involve editing the current state of your site. This includes adding new pages and sections, or formatting new blog posts for publication. 

The basic plan includes 30 minutes/month in content updates. On average, a content update takes 10 to 15 minutes, so that’s roughly 2 to 3 updates each month. The premium plan includes one hour/month, which translates to 4 to 6 updates each month.

  • Disk Space

Your allocated disk space determines how many files, such as PDFs, images and videos, you can upload to your site. This does not include the space that your theme or database takes up. 

The basic plan comes with 100 MB, which is more than enough for most of our clients (currently our clients average 10MB). But some clients have certain requirements that exceed 100MB, which is why we offer the premium plan.  If you want to add lots of image galleries, hosted videos, and large PDFs to your site, you may eventually need to upgrade to our premium hosting plan.

  • Bandwidth

We allocate 10 GB of bandwidth per month for every website that uses our basic hosting plan.  Unless you find yourself on the front page of CNN, this is usually more than enough bandwidth for a typical professional services website. If your website exceeds the bandwidth allocation regularly, you should upgrade to the premium plan to make sure it doesn’t affect your page loading speeds. 

Which Plan is Right For Me?

The basic hosting plan is sufficient for most AltaStreet clients.  But here are a few scenarios where premium hosting would make sense:

      • Small to medium-sized offices – If you’re in a small office with limited support staff, it may be most efficient for us to post your weekly market summaries or industry articles for you.
      • Large files – If you’re posting 50-page PDF articles with market data every quarter, these can add up quickly.
      • Videos – It only takes 2 to 3 videos to reach 100MB. You can host videos with third-party video hosting companies like YouTube or Vimeo if you want to avoid exceeding your memory and bandwidth allocations.

Our recommendation is to start small. Unless you know from the start that you’ll exceed one of the basic plan’s limits, there’s really no need for the premium packages for most websites. We’ll let you know when it’s time to move up and upgrade to our premium hosting plan.
